1989

28 Black Forest Ham producers join forces and lay the foundation for the Schutzverband der Schwarzwälder Schinkenhersteller e.V. in Villingen-Schwenningen. From the very beginning, the association pursues the goal of protecting the traditional and handcrafted ham speciality and preserving its traditional characteristics for future generations.

The founding members are: Hans Adler OHG, Metzgerei Fridolin Bonath KG, Bösinger Fleischwaren, Brucker, Manfred Dosenbach, W. Dürr, Rolf Eppstein, Fleischerinnung Schwarzwald-Bodensee, E. Gerswein, Metzgerei Max Haller, Metzgerei Karl Harle, Landmetzgerei Heinzelmann, Karl-Georg Hils, Leopold Hornung KG, Kalbacher GmbH, Fr. Kilgens, Kinzigtäler Schwarzwaldfleisch GmbH, Alfred Kramer, Nepomuk Lehmann, Lutz KG, F. Nikolaus, Odermatt KG, Franz Riegger, Franz Spinner, Tannenhof GmbH, Wein, Franz Winterhalter, Paul Winterhalter, WUFA Lörrach.

1997

A milestone achieved in the history of the Schutzverband: The European Union in Brussels protects Black Forest Ham with the designation of PGI, which stands for “Protected Geographical Indication”. In the future, Black Forest Ham will have to be produced exclusively in the Black Forest region according to traditional production methods. The following will receive the certificate in Brussels: Karl-Heinz Blum, Hans Schnekenburger, Dr. Hansjörg Adler.

2005

The European Patent Office reserves Black Forest Ham for product group 29.

2006-2008

“The Manufactory Tour” – The Black Forest Ham is promoted nationwide.

2013

The Black Forest Ham Museum in Feldberg is opened with a huge celebration. The museum is located at an altitude of 1,493 meters in the Feldberg Tower and has been a crowd-puller right from the start. Interactive stations in 3 languages explain everything you need to know about the production and enjoyment of Black Forest Ham in an entertaining and playful way.

2014

In September, green light is given for “The 1st Black Forest Ham Run”. Association members, clubs, athletes and hobby runners from all over the region start at the Feldberghalle in Altglashütten for the 5 km and 10 km run. For the little ones there is a children run over 350 m.

2016

The association launches the campaign „Genuss auf meine Art!“ translating to “Enjoyment in my way!”. The provocative images are attracting attention nationwide. Together with the Black Forest biathlete and ham ambassador Benedikt Doll, the campaign conveys the modern values of the traditional ham speciality.

2018

The members of the association adopt a joint mission statement. The central message is: Black Forest Ham stands for enjoyment and zest for life.

2019

The “Taste Tradition” campaign is launched. Timeless tradition that you can taste.

2021

The campaign „Mit allen Sinnen genießen“ translating to „Enjoy with all your senses“.

The artisanal production of Black Forest Ham is a five-sensory experience.

Salting, seasoning and smoking are rendered into a sensual performance.

The campaign is accompanied by the first On-Pack Promotion for Black Forest Ham in the German trade.

2022

The campaign “ADD. EAT. ENJOY.”

Enjoyment can be very simple: add Black Forest Ham as an ingredient, bite into it and taste the variety. Also, the campaign is accompanied by a On-Pack Promotion in the German trade.
